Rocking Out in Science Class

"Mom," my daughter asked.  "Can I use the computer to do my homework?"

"Sure," I said.  "Go ahead."

Five minutes later, I heard rap music coming out of the room.  I went in to investigate.  My daughter was sitting at the computer moving to the funky groove. "Um, what are you doing?" I asked.

"Learning about the layers of the earth," she said.

"Seriously?"

"Yeah.  We did this in class today, and everybody started dancing."

"And the teacher was okay with that?"

"She's the one who made us listen."

I took that as a "yes."

So ladies and gentlemen, this must be the new way of teaching.  Forget about long lists of words and facts to memorize.  Rapping your way through school is way more fun! (Do you think it works?)

  7. so funny you should post this today--just yesterday we were talking about how young children remember stuff easier when they are doing something else, like bouncing on a big a ball---i totally think music and movement can help with some children :)

  8. I think that's brilliant, but Sherry, I'm worried about you. How could you think the three men on my blog are all the same person? It's three different pictures. It has to be three different men.

    Love,
Janie, who won't be able to get that rap out of her head for days

    1. Janie, you totally crack me up! Why are you trying to mess with my head? My kids do that. I don't need my blog mommy doing it, too! ;0)

PS: I'm glad that rap song is stuck in your head. Payback for trying to mess with mine! ;0)

  9. I think it definitely works. Back in the day, I remember Potsy Webber on Happy Days (I watched the re-runs) learn biology by putting the body parts to song, so I started doing it.

  11. Thank you so much for coming by my madness and chaos...

    Imagine that... dancing to learn...

Maybe I need to get my students to twerk... maybe that would help them...

  14. This really is pretty cool. I gotta think that kids will remember this. How creative.
He left out the part about the Mole People, though. But, I guess he didn't want to cause a panic.

    1. Yeah. Learning about Mole People would've totally freaked a lot of those tween girls. It would've resulted in mass pandemonium. Something the teachers would not have liked!

  16. LOL, that's certainly a creative way to teach! I don't think this would've helped me learn, but if it can work on some students, then it's definitely worth a go...

    1. What I like about today's teaching, is they employ many different methods for helping kids learn. If one doesn't work, another will.

  18. Oh how I miss reading your blog and being in the blog world. I'm now catching up with the posts I have missed. Pretty creative. I think it depends how each student prefer absorbing the lessons. Some like to read while some find it easier through music. I remember using code words to memorize mathematical formulas. :)

  19. Hi, Sherry. If it helps kids learn, I'm all for it. In elementary school, my son learned some stuff for school by watching Schoolhouse Rock. We had a couple of VHS tapes at one time. Don't know what happened to them. You can find some of the videos on YouTube. I can still sing the words to 3 Is A Magic Number, I'm Just A Bill, Lolly, Lolly, Lolly Get Your Adverbs Here and several other ones.
